Queen Latifah
Dana Elaine Owens is an American singer and rapper better recognized under the stage name, Queen Latifah. In music, film and television, Queen Latifah is the recipient of 2 Screen Actors Guild Awards (two Image Awards), a Grammy Award and six additional Grammy nods and nominations for the Emmy Award. Queen Latifah grew up in Newark, New Jersey. Her parents are Rita Owens Sr. and Lancelot Owens Jr. Latifah's parents divorced when she was 10 years old. Latifah grew up within the Baptist religion and went to Catholic school at Newark New Jersey. Latifah refers to an Arabic term that translates to "delicate and kind". The cousin she had bestowed it on her in the age of eight. Latifah's height of 5'10" was enough to make her a formidable forward during high school. She performed the song "Home" from The Wiz in a performance at her highschool. Latifah started beatboxing for the group known as Ladies Fresh. Latifah is one of the first members of the Flavor Unit, which was at that time a collective composed of MCs led by DJ Mark the45 King. Mark James aka the DJ Mark the 40 King, created a demo of the hip-hop Princess of the Posse by Queen Latifah. The recorded was sent to Yo! MTV Raps who is known as Freddy. Dante Ross of Tommy Boy Music was signed by Latifah upon hearing the track. The singer released her debut single Wrath of My Madness, in 1988.
