Queen Latifah
Dana Elaine Owens also known as Queen Latifah is an American rapper singer. Her work as a music, film and TV artist has garnered her two Screen Actors Guild Awards and two Image Awards. She also received an Grammy Award and six other Grammy nominations. Queen Latifah's parents are Lancelot and Rita Owens, both police officers. Rita was a Newark New Jersey teacher who was a teacher in Irvington High School. Latifah's parents divorced at the age of ten. Latifah grew up in the Baptist religion and went to Catholic school in Newark New Jersey. Latifah is a word that means gentle and kind. Her cousin gave it to her at the age of aged eight. Latifah's height of 5'10" allowed her to be a formidable athlete during high school. She performed the hit song home from The Wiz at a high-school play. Latifah was part of the Ladies Fresh, a rap collective that started her beatboxing career. Latifah was a part of in the Flavor Unit in its original version, made up of an MC team with producer DJ Mark The 45 King. Mark James (aka DJ Mark the45King) recorded a sample of Queen Latifah her rap Princess of the Posse. The recording was given to the host of Yo! MTV Raps Fab 5 Freddy. Dante Ross, an employee of Tommy Boy Music who heard the track and was signed by Latifah in 1988 for the release of her first track Wrath of My Madness.
