Queen Latifah

Dana Elaine Owens, better known as Queen Latifah in the United States is a rapper and actress. in film, music and television, Queen Latifah has won 2 Screen Actors Guild Awards (two Image Awards), a Grammy Award, six more Grammy nods and nominations for her Emmy Award. Queen Latifah is a Newark New Jersey native. Her parents were Lancelot Sr. who was a policeman, and Rita who was a teacher of Irvington High School. Latifah's mother and father separated after Latifah was ten years old. Latifah lived within the Baptist faith and attended Catholic school at Newark New Jersey. Latifah means gentle and very gentle. Her cousin gave it to her when she was 8. Latifah's 5'10" height allowed her to be a formidable athlete during high school. She performed the song "Home" from The Wiz in a performance in her high school. Latifah began beatboxing with the group known as Ladies Fresh. Latifah used to be a member of the Flavor Unit - a group of rappers who gathered around the producer, DJ Mark the 45 King. Mark James, aka DJ Mark the45 King recorded Queen Latifah's rap Princess of the Posse. The recording was sent to Yo! MTV Raps Faddy. Dante Ross of Tommy Boy Music was signed by Latifah following her hearing of the song. She released her first single, Wrath of My Madness, in 1988.
