Queen Latifah
Dana Elaine Owens, better than Queen Latifah the US, is an actress and rapper. In music, film and on television, Queen Latifah has received the award of two Screen Actors Guild Awards (two Image Awards), a Grammy Award as well as six more Grammy nods and nominations for her Emmy Award. Queen Latifah was born in and lived in Newark New Jersey the daughter of Rita a schoolteacher who worked in Irvington High School and Lancelot Owens Sr. as a police officer. Latifah's parents separated when she was 10 years old. Latifah went to Catholic school in Newark the state of New Jersey. She was also raised through the Baptist Church. Latifah refers to an Arabic term that translates to "delicate and compassionate". The cousin she had granted it to her in the age of eight. Always tall, the 5'10 tall Latifah was a forward for her high school basketball team. In a school production, she performed the song Home from The Wiz. Latifah was part of the Ladies Fresh, a rap group that launched her beatboxing career. Latifah was one of the founding members of the form of Flavor Unit which at that the time was comprised of MCs who were grouped around producer DJ Mark the 45 King. Mark James aka the DJ Mark the 40 King, created an example of the rapper Princess of the Posse by Queen Latifah. He gave the recording to Yo! MTV Raps who is known as Freddy. Dante Ross of Tommy Boy Music was interested by the song. He signed Latifah, and released her debut track Wrath of My Madness in 1988.
