Queen Latifah
Dana Elaine Owens better known by her stage name Queen Latifah, is an American rapper actress and singer. Queen Latifah is an American rapper, actress and performer. Queen Latifah's parents are Lancelot as well as Rita Owens. Both were police officers. Rita was a Newark New Jersey teacher, who worked in Irvington High School. Her parents divorced around the age of 10 years old. Latifah was brought up in the Baptist congregation and went to Catholic school within Newark New Jersey. Latifah is her name for stage before she was eight years old. It means fragile in Arabic. Latifah's height of 5'10" made her a powerful performer during high school. As part of a school production she performed the song Home from The Wiz. Latifah was part of the Ladies Fresh, a rap group which launched her beatboxing career. Latifah was a part of in the Flavor Unit in its original model, consisting of an MC team and DJ Mark The 45 King. Mark James aka DJ Mark the 45 King, recorded an unreleased version of Queen Latifah's song Princess of the Posse. He handed the recording over to Yo! MTV Raps who is known as Freddy. The single caught the eye to Tommy Boy Music employee Dante Ross who was signed by Latifah and, in 1988, released her first single Wrath of My Madness.
