Queen Latifah
Dana Elaine Owens, better than Queen Latifah America, is a performer and actress. The role of Queen Latifah on television, film as well as music has earned her several accolades. These include the Golden Globe Award two Screen Actors Guild Awards Two Image Awards A Grammy Award Additional Grammy Nominations Emmy Award Nomination and an Academy Award. Queen Latifah was raised in Newark, New Jersey. Her parents are Rita Owens Sr. and Lancelot Owens Jr. The couple divorced when Latifah was 10 years old. Latifah was born and raised within Newark New Jersey attended Catholic school in Newark. The stage name Latifah which means delicate and gentle in Arabic was bestowed by her cousin at the age of she was just eight years old. Latifah was 5-foot-10" tall forward on her high school team was always tall. She performed the hit song Home from The Wiz at a school play. Latifah was a member of Ladies Fresh, a rap group which launched her beatboxing career. Latifah is one of the original members of the Flavor Unit, which was in the beginning a group made up of DJ Mark the45 King. Mark James, aka DJ Mark the45 King recorded Queen Latifah's rap Princess of the Posse. He then gave it to Yo! MTV Raps, Freddy. Dante Ross of Tommy Boy Music was signed by Latifah after hearing the song. The singer released her debut single Wrath of My Madness, in the year 1988.
