Queen Latifah

Dana Elaine Owens, better known as Queen Latifah in the US, is a rapper and actress. Queen Latifah's work in music film and television has earned her an Golden Globe award two Screen Actors Guild Awards two Image Awards a Grammy Award Six additional Grammy nominations and an Emmy Award nomination and an Academy Award nomination. Queen Latifah is a Newark New Jersey native. Her parents are Lancelot Sr. as a police officer as well as Rita instructor at Irvington High School. The couple divorced after Latifah reached the age of ten. Latifah was brought up in the Baptist church and she attended Catholic schools at Newark New Jersey. In her early twenties when her mother gave her stage names Latifah which translates to delicate and kind in Arabic. Latifah's height of 5'10" made her a powerful performer in high school. She performed the hit song Home from The Wiz at a high-school play. Latifah was a member of the Ladies Fresh, a rap group which launched her beatboxing career. Latifah joined the Flavor Unit in its original version, made up of a team of MCs led by producer DJ Mark The 45 King. Mark James (aka DJ Mark the45King) recorded a demo for Queen Latifah her rap Princess of the Posse. The recording was given to Yo! MTV Raps Freddy. Dante Ross, an employee of Tommy Boy Music who heard the song and was signed by Latifah in 1988, to drop her debut track Wrath of My Madness.
