Queen Latifah

Dana Elaine Owens better known by her stage name Queen Latifah, is an American rapper actress and singer. Her work as a music actor, filmmaker and TV performer has earned her two Screen Actors Guild Awards and two Image Awards. She also won a Grammy Award as well as six additional Grammy nominations. Queen Latifah was raised in Newark, New Jersey. She is the daughter of Rita Owens, Sr. and Lancelot Owens Jr. Latifah's parents divorced when Latifah was ten years old. was ten years old. Latifah was a student at a Catholic school and received her education in Newark New Jersey. She was a member of at the Baptist church. In her early twenties when her mother gave her stage names Latifah which translates to tender and gentle in Arabic. Latifah has always been tall, standing 5'10" and was the center forward on her high school basketball team. The song she sang was"Home" from The Wiz at a school play. Latifah was part of the Ladies Fresh, a rap group that launched her beatboxing career. Latifah joined the Flavor Unit's original group, made up of several MCs as well as DJ Mark 45 King. Mark James, aka DJ Mark the45 King, recorded Queen Latifah's rap Princess of the Posse. He handed the recording over to Yo! MTV Raps The Fab 5 Freddy. The track caught the attention to Tommy Boy Music employee Dante Ross who was signed by Latifah and released her first track Wrath of My Madness.
