Queen Latifah

Dana Elaine Owens better known by her stage name Queen Latifah is an American performer and actress. Queen Latifah is an American rapper, actress as well as a singer. Queen Latifah was raised in Newark, New Jersey. She is the daughter of Rita Owens Sr. and Lancelot Owens Jr. Latifah's parents divorced when she was 10 years old. Latifah lived within the Baptist faith and attended Catholic school at Newark New Jersey. Latifah can be described as an Arabic word that means "delicate and kind". Her aunt gave it to her when she was eight. Always a tall girl her height of 5'10 inches Latifah was a power forward on her basketball team in high school. In her high school's play, Latifah performed "Home" from The Wiz. Latifah was part of Ladies Fresh, a rap group which launched her beatboxing career. Latifah was one of those who were part of the first model of the Flavor Unit which at that time was a crew composed of MCs and producers led by DJ Mark the 45 King. Mark James aka the 45 King, recorded a version of Queen Latifah's Princess of the Posse rap. The song was sent to host Yo! MTV Raps Freddy. Dante Ross, an employee of Tommy Boy Music who heard the song and signed Latifah in 1988 to release her first single Wrath of My Madness.
