Queen Latifah
Dana Elaine Owens is an American singer and rapper better than her stage name, Queen Latifah. Her work as a music as well as a film and television artist has earned the actress two Screen Actors Guild Awards and two Image Awards. She also was awarded an Grammy Award and six other Grammy nominations. Queen Latifah is a Newark New Jersey native. Her parents are Lancelot Sr. who was a policeman, as well as Rita teacher of Irvington High School. The couple divorced in the year Latifah was ten years old. Latifah, who was born and raised within Newark New Jersey attended Catholic school in Newark. Latifah means gentle and very gentle. The name was given by her cousin to her at the age of 8. Always a tall girl the 5'10 tall Latifah was a power forward on the basketball team at her high school. In a school production, she sang Home from The Wiz. Latifah started beatboxing for the group known as Ladies Fresh. Latifah joined the Flavor Unit's first group, made up of a variety of MCs, as well as DJ Mark 45 King. Mark James (aka DJ Mark the45King) recorded a demo for Queen Latifah rapper Princess of the Posse. The recorded was sent to Yo! MTV Raps The Fab 5 Freddy. Dante Ross of Tommy Boy Music was a member of Latifah at the time and was awed by the song. In 1988 she released Wrath of My Madness as Latifah's debut single.
